Mumbai has no shortage of digital marketing agencies. Search "digital marketing agency Mumbai" and you'll get hundreds of results, most promising the same thing: more traffic, more leads, more sales. Almost none of them tell you how they'll actually get there.
If you're a small or mid-sized business owner trying to pick one, here's what actually matters — and what to ignore.
1. Ask what "digital marketing" means to them
The term gets used as a catch-all. Some agencies mean "we'll post on Instagram twice a week." Others mean a full stack: SEO, paid ads, content, branding, and website work, all pulling in the same direction.
Before anything else, ask for a breakdown of exactly what's included. If the answer is vague, that's your first red flag.
2. Check if they can show real work, not just claims
Every agency website says "50+ happy clients" and "5-star results." Numbers alone don't mean much without context. Ask to see:
Actual client websites or social pages they manage
Before/after data — ranking positions, traffic growth, ad performance
Work across your specific industry, or at least a comparable one
A short, honest portfolio beats a long, generic one.
3. Understand how they price and what you get for it
Digital marketing pricing in Mumbai varies wildly — from ₹10,000/month bedroom-agency retainers to ₹1,00,000+ for full-service agencies with ad spend management. Neither extreme is automatically right or wrong, but the price should map clearly to deliverables: number of posts, hours of ad management, reporting frequency, SEO scope.
If a quote feels suspiciously low, ask what's being cut. Usually it's strategy, reporting, or actual optimization work — the parts that produce results.
4. Ask about SEO specifically, even if you're hiring for something else
A large share of agencies treat SEO as an afterthought because it's slower and harder to sell than ads. But SEO is what keeps bringing in traffic long after you stop paying for a campaign. Ask directly: does this agency understand on-page SEO, local SEO, and technical basics like schema markup and site speed? If they can't explain it simply, they probably don't do it well.
5. Look for agencies that understand your local market
A generic "we do digital marketing anywhere" pitch misses something important — local intent. If you're a business serving Ghatkopar, Chembur, Kurla, or the wider Mumbai suburbs, you want an agency that understands local search behavior, Google Business Profile optimization, and how customers in your area actually search for services like yours.
6. Watch for lock-in contracts and no exit clause
Good agencies earn renewal through results, not through 12-month contracts with no way out. Ask what happens if things aren't working after 60 or 90 days. A confident agency will have a clear answer.
7. Judge them by their own marketing
This sounds obvious, but it's often skipped. If an agency is pitching you on SEO and their own website doesn't rank for anything, or their own social pages are inactive, that tells you something. The best test of a marketing agency is whether they can market themselves.
Questions to ask before you sign:
~What does a typical month of work look like for a client my size?
~How do you measure and report results?
~Who will actually work on my account — a dedicated person or a rotating team?
~What's included in the retainer, and what costs extra?
~Can I see a sample report from a current client?
